What are the ADA basics of SMEs?

On Behalf of Hogan & Pritchard, PLLC | Jan 29, 2026 | Employment Law For Employers |

Understanding the basics of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) can feel intimidating, especially for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). Yet, the goal of the law is to help ensure that people with disabilities can access public spaces and services. For SMEs, this doesn’t just mean compliance, as it can shape how customers experience your business and how your team functions every day.

Many businesses think ADA requirements are only about ramps or bathroom accessibility. While those are important, the law extends further. It covers digital accessibility, employee accommodations and even subtle operational changes that can make your business more inclusive.

Making accessibility work for your business

Implementing ADA basics is easier when broken down into clear, actionable areas:

  • Physical access: Make sure entrances, hallways and service areas are navigable for people with mobility challenges. Even small adjustments, like a wider doorway or a rearranged layout, can make a difference.
  • Digital accessibility: Your website and online services should be usable by people with disabilities. Simple changes, such as alt text for images or screen reader-friendly navigation, can have a major impact.
  • Employee accommodations: Not every adjustment requires major expense. Flexible scheduling, modified workstations or assistive technology can help employees perform their roles effectively.
  • Communication adjustments: Offer multiple ways for customers to reach you. This might include captioned videos, accessible forms or clear written instructions.
  • Ongoing review: Accessibility isn’t a one-time project. Regularly assess your spaces, tools and processes for continued inclusivity.

Following ADA basics doesn’t need to be stressful. Taking small, intentional steps can create a business that welcomes everyone.

While these measures provide a solid starting point, the details can get complex depending on your industry, location or size. Having guidance from a legal team experienced in ADA matters can help you plan adjustments that fit your business without unnecessary hurdles.
